Deputy-Involved Crash Kills 1, Injures 4 Others

NORTH LAUDERDALE, FL – Boca Post (BocaPost.com) — The Broward Sheriff’s Office tells Boca Post that they are investigating a deputy-involved crash that killed one and left four others injured.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office tells Boca Post that a deputy was involved in a deadly crash that killed one and injured four while responding to an emergency call for service.

BSO tells us that traffic homicide detectives are investigating a deputy-involved fatal crash that occurred at 5 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 3, near the intersection of West McNab Road and Avon Lane.

The preliminary investigation revealed Ted Belizaire and a passenger in a 2008 Volkswagen Beatle were traveling northbound on Avon Lane through the intersection of West McNab Road.

At the same time, a BSO deputy was driving a marked BSO 2017 Dodge Charger and was heading westbound on West McNab Road in the designated right turn lane approaching the intersection of Avon Lane. The BSO deputy was responding to an in-progress emergency call with his lights and sirens activated.

Meanwhile, the driver and passenger of a 2020 Honda Civic and the driver and passenger of a 2019 Mercedes Metris van were traveling southbound on Avon Lane and were stopped for the red light at the intersection of West McNab Road.

According to BSO traffic homicide, the driver of the Volkswagen Beatle traveled northbound into the intersection against a red traffic signal into the path of the BSO unit. The front of the BSO unit struck the passenger side of the Volkswagen Beatle in a T-bone-type collision within the intersection. The impact caused both vehicles to rotate clockwise. The Volkswagen Beatle slid over the pavement while rotating and struck the front of the 2020 Honda Civic. The BSO-marked unit slid across the intersection and struck the raised curb before coming to final rest. Debris from the initial impact struck the 2019 Mercedes Metris van causing minor damage.

After the crash, North Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported several individuals to local hospitals for treatment. The driver of the Volkswagen Beatle received injuries listed as life-threatening. The passenger of the Volkswagen Beatle was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The other individuals involved in the crash received injuries reported not to be life-threatening.

The investigation is ongoing.

BSO is withholding the deputy’s name while claiming Marsy’s law which designates the deputy as a victim.
