BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2025) — Early reports indicate that a heavy law enforcement response shut down the Walmart at 22100 FL-7 in West Boca Raton Tuesday night after reports of explosive sounds or possible gunfire in the parking lot prompted an evacuation and a wide search of the area.

Information remained fluid late Tuesday, with early reports varying on what exactly occurred. Multiple chatter sources initially described “reports of shooting” near the store, with one account saying a loud bang — described as either an explosion or a gunshot — was heard in the parking lot around 8:45 p.m.

By about 9:20 p.m., reports of police activity near the Walmart began circulating. Additional updates followed between 9:30 and 10:15 p.m., including reports that the store had been evacuated and deputies were actively investigating. One update referred to a “strategic impact involving mortar” in West Boca Raton, language that caused confusion online and was not independently explained in the information available late Tuesday.

Residents near the store reported a low-flying law enforcement helicopter banking sharply overhead for an extended period. One resident described the aircraft flying “roughly 100 feet off the treetops” while deputies wearing combat-style helmets blocked off the Walmart property.

Eyewitness chatter on social media added further context but no confirmation. One person said they had just left the store as police were arriving and claimed they saw what appeared to be fireworks in the parking lot, describing them as producing “a ball of smoke.” That individual said they left the area immediately. Another commenter said they had heard there was a shooting inside the Walmart, though no official information provided late Tuesday confirmed that claim.

Employees were evacuated from the store, according to comments from individuals familiar with the scene. Nearby residents across multiple West Boca neighborhoods reported hearing or seeing the helicopter circling and asked repeatedly for updates as the response continued.

Separately, information included in the initial reports indicated that fire rescue was staging for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and that an EOD component had been requested or considered. That detail suggests authorities were proceeding cautiously while assessing the initial reports, though no official explanation was provided in the information available.

As of late Tuesday night, there was no confirmed information released on injuries, arrests, or whether the sounds reported were gunfire, fireworks, or another source. Authorities had not publicly detailed what prompted the evacuation or the tactical posture observed by residents.

This story will be updated as confirmed information becomes available.

UPDATE (Late Night)

As of late Tuesday night, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has not confirmed any details about the reported incident at the Walmart in West Boca Raton, including whether a shooting, explosive device, or other criminal activity occurred. Boca Post has requested information from PBSO but has not received official confirmation as of publication.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue personnel were seen staging in the neighboring Lowes parking lot.

UPDATE - 12/17/25 - 6:28 AM

A spokesperson with the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office has confirmed with Boca Post that an individual has committed suicide in their car. It is unclear if there was ever a "Standoff" with deputies or if the large response observed was out of an abundance of caution.
