BSO Warns Travelers About Illegal Rideshare Solicitors at Fort Lauderdale Airport

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2025) — With holiday travel ramping up across South Florida, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is urging travelers arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to be on alert for unlicensed rideshare solicitors operating inside and around airport terminals.

According to BSO’s Airport District, crowded terminals during peak travel periods often attract illegal rideshare drivers who attempt to blend in with legitimate operators, approaching passengers directly and offering rides without using an official app.

“Christmas brings a surge of travelers and whenever the terminals get packed, the number of unlicensed rideshare drivers trying to blend in rises along with it,” said Airport District Captain Brian Montgomery. “Let me be clear — operating as an unlicensed driver is illegal. We’re tightening our curbside oversight and increasing patrols to keep travelers safe and ensure everyone gets to their destination without being swindled.”

BSO said it is increasing patrols and enforcement at airport pickup areas in coordination with the Broward County Aviation Division, focusing on curbside activity where illegal solicitation typically occurs.

Officials warn that unlicensed drivers may approach travelers with casual greetings or vague questions such as, “Hey, I’m your driver,” or “Are you heading to Miami?” Law enforcement says those interactions should immediately raise concern.

Legitimate rideshare drivers, BSO said, will always confirm the passenger’s name and match vehicle details shown in the app, including the driver’s name, license plate number, and vehicle make and model. Travelers are urged to rely on the app, not personal assurances.

BSO also stressed that passengers should only use designated rideshare pickup zones at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Authorized pickup areas are clearly marked and located on the arrivals level between Terminals 1 and 2, as well as inside the Palm Garage. Posted signage directs passengers to those locations, and legitimate drivers know to meet riders there.

Officials said vehicles providing authorized rideshare services should display company decals. A missing or obscured decal is considered another warning sign.

Riding with an unlicensed driver carries significant risks, according to BSO. The driver may lack a valid license, proper insurance, or required background screening. Law enforcement officials said legal rideshare companies, as well as taxis and limousine services, provide accountability through driver tracking and background checks.

BSO encourages travelers to refuse rides from unauthorized solicitors and seek help from uniformed deputies or airport employees if they are unsure about a driver’s legitimacy.

“When in doubt, ask a BSO deputy or an airport employee for assistance,” Montgomery said. “Riding with a stranger who refuses to follow the law is a bad idea.”

The sheriff’s office also advises travelers to trust their instincts. If a situation feels uncomfortable or rushed, officials say it is best to walk away and use approved transportation options.

“Remember, your safety is too important,” Montgomery said.
