51-Year-Old Odely Joseph Dies Aboard Hohebank Ship In Accident At Port Everglades

The Broward Sheriff’s Office provided an update on the tragic accident that killed a worker aboard the “Hohebank” ship docked at Port Everglades on Friday, October 21st, 2022.

BSO tells Boca Post that at approximately 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to an industrial accident near the 2000 block of Southeast 42nd Street in Port Everglades. When emergency crews arrived, they located an injured adult male aboard the Hohebank ship, where the incident occurred. Paramedics evaluated the male, later identified as 51-year-old Odely Joseph of Fort Lauderdale, and he was subsequently pronounced deceased on the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates a shipping container struck the victim prior to his death. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
BSO homicide detectives and authorities with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the circumstances surrounding this fatality.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Boca Post) — The Broward Sheriff’s Office responded to Port Everglades in response to reports that a man was injured after being struck by a shipping container.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office tells Boca Post that at approximately 8:36 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications received a call about an unresponsive adult male near the 2000 block of Southeast 42nd Street in Port Everglades.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded. When deputies arrived, they made contact with the victim, who witnesses say had been struck by a shipping container. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue also responded; the adult male was pronounced deceased on the scene. Crime scene and homicide detectives were notified and are investigating the circumstances surrounding this death.

The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office. The investigation continues.
