DELRAY BEACH, FL (Boca Post) — You will need to plan on taking an alternate path if planning on traveling across the Intracoastal into Gulf Stream or Delray Beach via the George Bush bridge.

Palm Beach County Road and Bridges department are telling us this morning that the George Bush Bascule Bridge is locked in the open position due to a malfunction.

Bridge staff reportedly became aware of an issue with the bridge on Thursday night at 9:30 PM. The bridge has since been secured but may not be used for travel at this time.

Investigators found that the shaft has been sheared into two pieces. PBC is telling us that the bridge will likely be out of service for the duration of the repair. This is bad news for motor vehicles but good news for large boats that will not be affected by the bridge’s open position.

PBC could not yet provide an estimate of the closure.
