UPDATE

Delray Beach Fire Rescue tells Boca Post that 4 people were injured when a fuel tanker caught fire and crashed on Interstate 95 in Delray Beach Tuesday afternoon. Delray Beach Fire Rescue, with help from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and Boca Raton Fire Rescue, responded to fight the blaze, from which black, billowing smoke could be seen for miles.

The incident happened just before 1:15 p.m. in the northbound lanes just south of the Atlantic Avenue interchange. Two other vehicles were also engulfed in flames, and firefighters heard and saw explosions coming from the tanker fire as they arrived.
Three of the five injured people were categorized as trauma alerts and transported to Delray Medical Center. One of those was later flown to the Miami Burn Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. Delray Beach Police and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office assisted.

I-95 was closed for hours as firefighters used foam and water to put out the large fire, as well as a secondary fire ignited by fuel from the tanker that traveled under the highway, through a storm drain, and ignited on the west side of the southbound lanes. FHP will determine how the crash and fire occurred.

UPDATE

Boca Post has been told that at least 3 people have suffered critical injuries from the accident.

Large smoke plumes can be observed in parts of Delray Beach as well as Boca Raton.
