On January 22nd of this year 2025 marks the consecutive year that the Broward Sheriff’s Office has been actively involved in the “Alert Today Alive Tomorrow” campaign aimed at safeguarding pedestrians and cyclists on the countys roads. Administered by the Florida Department of Transportation the initiative has recently secured a funding of almost three hundred thousand dollars ($29388229) through a partnership with the University of North Florida’s Institute of Police Technology and Management. This financial support enables deputies to not educate but also enforce safe practices among pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, across Broward County. The contracts total sum amounts to $36271934 with the aim of reducing traffic accidents and fatalities involving pedestrians and cyclists through initiatives on traffic safety and enforcement operations until May 9th in 2025. During this program period in BSO areas tDeputies will engage in on street conversations with drivers, cyclists and pedestrians who frequent the county roads to increase awareness and compliance with traffic regulations as, per Florida State Statutes by issuing warnings and citations where necessary. Research indicates that accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists are often more severe, in terms of injuries compared to types of accidents. The local authorities advise everyone to keep these safety guidelines in mind;. Pedestrians are encouraged to use the sidewalk whenever possible; if there is no sidewalk present they should walk towards traffic.. Cyclists are advised to use designated bike lanes where available and ride in the direction as traffic flow.. Both pedestrians and cyclists should refrain from using headphones or talking on their phones while out and about. Drivers need to stay focused when driving and be mindful of pedestrians at all times. • Pedestrians and cyclists should use designated crosswalks. Follow traffic signals strictly. • It’s important for pedestrians and cyclists to ensure they can be seen by drivers especially when out at night. • When sharing the road there should be at a 3 foot distance, between cyclists and vehicles.
