BROWARD COUNTY, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating the death of a driver who was shot and then crashed into another vehicle early Sunday in Pembroke Park.
Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Homicide Unit said the driver was shot before crashing into a vehicle near the 3900 block of West Hallandale Beach Boulevard.
Pembroke Park Police Department officers responded to a crash call at about 12:54 a.m. Sunday, May 10, according to BSO. At the scene, officers spoke with a witness who said the victim, identified as Daniel Mathis, had been involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown male at the Orion Gas Station at 3990 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd.
At some point, detectives said, the altercation escalated and Mathis was shot.
Mathis then tried to leave the area in a Dodge Challenger, according to investigators.
Detectives said that as Mathis attempted to enter traffic on Hallandale Beach Boulevard, he drove northbound over the center median. A Volkswagen SUV traveling westbound then collided with the Challenger in a T-bone type crash, BSO said.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded and transported Mathis to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced dead at about 1:36 a.m., according to BSO.
The investigation remains active. BSO is asking anyone with information about the fatal shooting to contact BSO Homicide Detective Lacey Henry at 954-321-4200 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch App.
People who want to remain anonymous can contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), go to browardcrimestoppers.org, or dial **TIPS (8477) from any cellphone in the United States.
