On the evening of August 7, 2024, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Cooper City District introduced a fresh activity during their National Night Out event. It turned out to be quite thrilling! For that one special night, the district’s jail was transformed into an authentic “Escape Room.” Participants from Cooper City took on the roles of “BSO Strategic Investigation Detectives,” who found themselves confined in a cell while investigating “The Collective,” a notorious criminal group. Fortunately, BSO’s Strategic Investigations Division (SID) had hidden escape clues for them to find within 45 minutes. Each group comprised eight individuals, closely observed by BSO staff from the Cooper City Real Time Crime Center. If needed, participants could receive up to three hints to aid their escape efforts. Afterward, they captured their fun filled experience with memorable photos. The event lasted from 3 p.m. To 9 p.m., filled with laughter, teamwork and unforgettable moments. It was an exciting and meaningful gathering where law enforcement officials bonded with the community.

BSO Cooper City Captain Christopher De Giovanni expressed his enthusiasm for the escape room activity as a successful community engagement effort. The initiative was aimed at fostering deeper connections with teenagers, evidenced by its quick full booking and waitlist within just 2 hours of announcement. This unique approach of law enforcement hosting an escape room experience and encouraging public participation in “breaking out of jail” was unprecedented but well received, allowing deputies to engage with the community in a fun and positive manner.
