“Bicycle and pedestrian safety takes center stage in the FDOT contract. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is actively engaged in the ‘Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow’ initiative by the Florida Department of Transportation, aiming to safeguard pedestrians and cyclists on county roads. This marks BSO’s 11th year of involvement in the program.

Under a partnership with the University of North Florida’s Institute of Police Technology and Management, BSO has received $68,837.05 to promote safe behaviors among pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists across Broward County. The primary objective is to decrease traffic accidents and fatalities involving pedestrians and cyclists through educational initiatives, warnings and enforcement activities.

Running until May 9, 2025, the enforcement campaign emphasizes enhancing awareness and adherence to traffic regulations. Deputies within BSO jurisdictions will engage in on site education by interacting with motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians using county roads. They will enforce Florida State Statutes by issuing warnings and citations as necessary.

Studies indicate that pedestrian and bicycle accidents are more prone to causing severe or fatal injuries compared to other types of accidents.”The community is reminded by BSO to keep these safety tips in mind;
Pedestrians should stick to walking on the sidewalk. If there’s no sidewalk, walk facing the traffic.
Cyclists are advised to use bike lanes when available and ride in the same direction as traffic flow.
It’s best for pedestrians and cyclists to avoid distractions like using headphones or cellphones.
Motorists should steer clear of distractions while driving and always be alert for pedestrians.
When possible, pedestrians and cyclists should cross streets only at marked crosswalks or intersections, following all traffic signals.
To ensure safety, pedestrians and cyclists must make themselves visible to drivers when out at night.
Maintain a safe distance of at least 3 feet between bicycles and vehicles on the road.
