BOYNTON BEACH, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Palm Beach County has opened the final stage of Canyon District Park, marking a major expansion of public recreation space west of Boynton Beach as county leaders push to add amenities in fast-growing communities across the area.

The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Canyon District Park Phase II on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 8788 Senator Joe Abruzzo Avenue. County officials, community members and project partners gathered for the event, which marked the completion of the park’s last planned phase.

The expansion adds a broad set of features aimed at daily use by families, youth sports programs and residents looking for open public space. New amenities include baseball and softball fields, a destination accessible playground, sand volleyball courts, batting cages, pavilions with shade structures, a concession area, public restrooms and a sports-themed public art installation.

Those additions build on the park’s existing features and give western Palm Beach County another large county park with a mix of athletic, family and community uses in one place. County officials described the project as part of a wider effort to create public spaces that are functional, inclusive and built for long-term use.

For residents in the Boynton Beach area and nearby western communities, the opening matters because it adds more room for organized sports, outdoor play and day-to-day recreation in a part of the county that continues to grow. It also gives families access to an accessible playground and other park features designed to serve a wide range of ages and abilities.

Jennifer Cirillo, director of the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department, said the expansion was designed to support both recreation and community life.

“This expansion reflects a thoughtful approach to creating spaces that bring people together and enhance everyday life,” Cirillo said. “Canyon District Park Phase II was designed with care, offering opportunities for healthy, happy living and lasting community experiences.”

Palm Beach County Administrator Joe Abruzzo framed the project as a public investment tied to quality of life and long-term health.

“This is what smart investment looks like,” Abruzzo said. “By connecting residents to our parks, we’re delivering real value to the community, promoting active living, reducing stress, strengthening connections and facilitating long-term wellness in a healthy environment for all ages.”

Responsibility for the park sits with Palm Beach County, specifically its Parks and Recreation Department, which manages county park facilities and recreational amenities. The opening of Phase II signals that the county has now completed the final stage of development at this site, turning Canyon District Park into a fuller regional destination rather than a partially built facility waiting on future phases.

That matters for residents because the project is no longer in a transitional stage. The fields, playground, pavilions and support features are now part of the park’s permanent footprint. Public restrooms, concession space and shade structures also make the park more practical for longer visits, league play and community gatherings, not just quick drop-ins.

The sports-themed public art installation adds another civic element to the site, giving the park a visual feature beyond its athletic facilities. Combined with the accessible playground and expanded field space, the county is positioning the park as both a recreation hub and a community gathering place.

What comes next is less about construction and more about use. With the final phase complete, residents can expect the park to function as a fully built county amenity serving western Boynton Beach and surrounding neighborhoods. Families, youth leagues and other visitors will now be using the added facilities as part of the regular park system.

For Palm Beach County, the opening also serves as a visible example of how county-led park projects are being used to support active living and public access to recreation in developing parts of the county. For nearby residents, the takeaway is straightforward: Canyon District Park is now fully expanded, open and equipped with a larger mix of amenities than it had before.
