BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Travis Satterfield was honored in Boca Raton as the 2025 Deputy of the Year by the 100 Club of South Palm Beach County, recognition tied to his response during the Dec. 17, 2025 law enforcement incident at the Walmart on State Road 7 in West Boca.

The award centers on a night that drew a large emergency response to the store at 22100 FL-7, shut down the property, and left nearby residents watching helicopters circle overhead as deputies evacuated the area and worked what was initially described as a dangerous situation involving explosives in the parking lot.

According to the recognition shared with Boca Post, Satterfield provided critical protection for people on scene during the incident. When the situation turned tragic, the account states, he shifted quickly from the immediate law enforcement response to caring for the victim’s father and the man’s dog, Kalua.

That detail matters because the Dec. 17 response was one of those scenes that began with confusion and heavy police activity, then ended with a different reality than many residents first understood.

Boca Post reported that night that deputies and other emergency personnel responded to Walmart after reports of explosive sounds or possible gunfire in the parking lot prompted an evacuation and a wide search of the area. Early information moved fast and often conflicted. Residents described a low-flying law enforcement helicopter over West Boca neighborhoods. Witness chatter online mentioned fireworks, a loud bang, and unconfirmed claims of a shooting. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue staged nearby while deputies locked down the property.

By the next morning, a spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Boca Post that an individual had died by suicide in a car. At the time, PBSO had not confirmed whether there had been any standoff, and it remained unclear how the large response developed or whether it reflected caution around possible explosives or other threats in the parking lot.

The 100 Club’s recognition of Satterfield now adds a clearer public account of what happened after deputies arrived. The honor states that he not only protected those on scene during a dangerous incident, but also took responsibility for the people left behind once the immediate crisis had ended.

According to the award description, Satterfield ensured the safety and care of the victim’s father and Kalua, the family dog. He then helped secure shelter for the dog, connected the father with mental health support, and worked with PBSO’s Homeless Intervention Team to reunite the man and the dog with family members out of state.

That is a different kind of work than what most people see when a scene is active. The public usually sees the perimeter, the patrol vehicles, the tactical posture, the blocked entrances. What comes after often happens out of view. In this case, the recognition makes clear that Satterfield’s role did not end with the emergency response itself.

The 100 Club of South Palm Beach County honors first responders and supports public safety personnel and their families. Its Deputy of the Year recognition places Satterfield’s actions in a broader local context, not just as performance under pressure, but as follow-through after a traumatic event in a public place.

For West Boca residents who remember the Walmart evacuation and the unanswered questions that followed that night, the award also closes part of the loop. The scene was serious. It ended in a death. And one of the deputies there is now being recognized not only for handling danger, but for handling the aftermath with care.

No new enforcement action was announced in connection with the Dec. 17 case. The recognition instead focuses on Satterfield’s conduct at the scene and in the hours after it, particularly his efforts to protect a family member in crisis and make sure the dog was not left behind.
