The event is focused on recruiting school crossing guards, a role the Sheriff’s Office says is essential to protecting children who walk or bike to and from school. Crossing guards are assigned to school zones throughout the county and are responsible for assisting students as they cross roadways during arrival and dismissal times.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, school crossing guards are part of the agency’s School Traffic Safety Unit and work directly in neighborhoods near public schools. The positions are part-time and structured around school schedules, typically involving a morning shift and an afternoon shift. Some guards may work double shifts by covering two school posts.

The Sheriff’s Office says the job is designed for people who want to serve their community while working close to home. Guards are trained to recognize dangerous traffic situations, manage pedestrian movement, and use stop paddles to control traffic during school crossing periods. The role also includes providing safety awareness to students, including instruction on safe crossing techniques and pedestrian and bicycle safety laws.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or GED. Other requirements include dependable transportation, the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Guards must also be able to communicate clearly with children, motorists, and school staff, and must pass required training through the Florida Department of Transportation.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office says training and equipment are provided. The position includes an entry-level salary with cost-of-living increases, Florida Retirement System benefits, access to a wellness center, and part-time health insurance coverage paid by the Sheriff’s Office.
