BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — A heavy law enforcement presence in the Sandalfoot area drew attention after the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office responded to a person threatening to harm himself, prompting a shelter-in-place alert and extended aerial surveillance.
Residents in the area of Southwest 61st Way received a text message from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office instructing them to remain indoors as deputies worked what the agency described as an “emergency situation.” The alert advised residents to shelter in place due to active police activity and provided a contact number for questions.
The message stated: “The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is requesting everyone to shelter in place in the area of Southwest 61st Way due to heavy police activity working an emergency situation.”
The incident unfolded with a PBSO helicopter circling overhead for at least an hour, according to witnesses in the area. The sustained air presence signaled an ongoing operation as deputies worked on the ground.
PBSO confirmed the nature of the call, stating that deputies were responding to a person threatening to harm himself. No additional details about the individual or the circumstances leading up to the situation were immediately released.
The Sandalfoot area, an unincorporated community west of Boca Raton, falls under the jurisdiction of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, which handles law enforcement response and public safety operations in the area. Shelter-in-place alerts are typically issued when there is a potential risk to nearby residents or when law enforcement activity could create unsafe conditions outside.
The directive to remain indoors is intended to limit civilian movement while deputies secure the scene, assess the situation, and work toward a resolution. In incidents involving mental health crises, law enforcement may coordinate with crisis intervention teams or medical personnel to safely de-escalate the situation.
It remains unclear how long the shelter-in-place order will remain in effect or whether any roads in the immediate area have been closed as part of the response. There has been no indication of injuries or additional threats beyond the individual involved.
Residents in the area are advised to follow instructions from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and avoid the scene until the situation is resolved. Those with questions were directed to contact PBSO directly at the number included in the alert.
As of now, the situation remains active, with deputies continuing their response on the ground.
