BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — A Thursday night fire at Boca Raton Town Center Mall led to an evacuation, heavy smoke over the property, and traffic disruptions around one of the city’s busiest retail corridors.

Boca Raton Fire Rescue and Boca Raton Police responded to the mall at 6000 W. Glades Road shortly after 7 p.m. April 2 after reports of a structural fire. By 7:44 p.m., the fire was under control. No injuries were reported.

Boca Post first reported the breaking news as a Traffic Advisory Issued for Structure Fire Near West Glades Road.

The incident drew immediate attention from drivers and shoppers in the Glades Road area as smoke rose from the roofline. Witnesses told Boca Post they saw heavy smoke coming from the area of Bloomingdale’s, though no flames were seen from the outside.

Early on, firefighters determined that something on the roof was burning, but the roof itself did not appear to be compromised. The exact cause was not immediately confirmed at the scene. Initial uncertainty centered on whether the source was an air conditioning unit, an electrical problem, or another mechanical issue tied to the building.

By 7:27 p.m., information circulating from sources at the scene indicated the fire may have started as a small grease fire in the food court before spreading into the ventilation system. That would explain why smoke was seen billowing from the top of the mall rather than visible flames breaking through the roof. Firefighters remained on scene as crews worked the building and monitored conditions.

At 7:34 p.m., the fire was still burning, the evacuation remained in effect, and traffic was being diverted away from the mall. Boca Raton police later said that, out of an abundance of caution, the mall was being evacuated due to smoke and told the public to continue avoiding the area.

The city’s official alert described the incident as a structural fire and said Boca Raton Police Services Department and Fire Rescue units were actively working the scene. Police also said the fire was under control, but the scene remained active even after the immediate danger was reduced.

The incident unfolded at Town Center Mall during evening hours, a time when the property and surrounding roads typically carry heavy traffic. For residents and shoppers, the main takeaway was straightforward: avoid the area, expect detours, and do not assume a large police and fire presence at the mall means anything beyond the fire response itself.

That last point mattered Thursday night. Boca Post noted there was no indication this incident was connected to prior social media hoaxes involving threats of violence at the mall. This was a fire response, not a law enforcement operation tied to any public safety threat beyond the smoke and evacuation.

What happens next will likely depend on a routine fire investigation and any inspection of the affected systems inside the mall. Fire crews may remain on site after flames are knocked down to check for hidden hot spots, smoke movement, or damage within the ventilation system and nearby roof structures.

Residents should continue to watch for traffic impacts around Glades Road and follow any additional direction from Boca Raton Police or Boca Raton Fire Rescue regarding access to the property.
