Severe Weather Alert - Sunday, July 12, 2026
BOCA RATON, FL — Boca Raton and the surrounding coastal communities are getting a break from the most dangerous part of Sunday evening’s storm threat, but residents should not let their guard down. At 8:33 p.m., the National Weather Service in Miami cancelled the Severe Thunderstorm Warning that had included northern Broward and southwestern Palm Beach counties. The storm has weakened, but it is still capable of producing lightning, brief bursts of gusty wind, and small hail through the late evening as it moves slowly across the region.
The cancelled warning covered parts of east-central Collier, southeastern Hendry, northern Broward and southwestern Palm Beach counties—an area that includes the Boca Raton region’s broader commute and travel corridors. While the storm no longer meets “severe” criteria, the NWS cautioned that impacts can continue even after a warning ends, especially with lingering outflow winds and pockets of hail.
With the storm moving at only about 4 mph, any heavier downpours or lightning bursts can linger longer than typical summer storms. For Boca Raton residents, the main concerns tonight are sudden wind gusts that can toss around unsecured patio furniture, small hail that can briefly reduce visibility on roads, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.
If you hear thunder, move indoors immediately—lightning can strike well away from the heaviest rain. Drivers should slow down in any heavy shower, watch for water on roads, and be prepared for quick changes in visibility.
Looking beyond the immediate storm, the broader pattern remains dominated by very hot, hazy conditions. The NWS Area Forecast Discussion notes heat indices around 105–110 degrees each day into midweek, with drier air (including Saharan dust) limiting widespread coastal rain chances.
