BELLE GLADE, FL — A fatal crash on U.S. Highway 27 south of Belle Glade left one man dead and another person seriously injured Tuesday evening, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision happened at 14027 U.S. 27 South. Investigators say a 2020 Hyundai Elantra was traveling southbound in the outside lane. A 2006 Volvo semi truck was also traveling southbound in the outside lane, ahead of the Hyundai.

For reasons investigators say remain unknown, the driver of the Hyundai failed to identify that the semi truck was traveling in the same lane. The front of the Hyundai struck the rear of the semi. After impact, the Hyundai rotated counterclockwise and came to an uncontrolled final rest on the left shoulder facing southbound. The semi truck was brought to a controlled stop on the right shoulder, south of the crash scene.

The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 52-year-old Julius Brown Jr., was pronounced deceased at the scene by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue at 7 p.m. A passenger in the Hyundai, 41-year-old Carrine Cole, was transported to Delray Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the semi truck, identified as 51-year-old Osmany Alvarez-Pino, was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division.
