BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) — A Boca Raton man has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and will serve two years in prison for his romantic relationship with an underage girl.

Michael Douglas Tyson, 31, of Boca Raton, has been found guilty and received a two-year prison sentence to be followed by two years of probation. According to court records, Tyson pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of “FELONY BATTERY” FSS 784.041(13) which is a felony but not a sex crime.

The trial followed charges that were filed against the 31-year-old restaurant worker who was accused of being intimate with a 14-year-old girl when he was 29. Tyson maintained his innocence during the court proceedings until today when he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

According to the original arrest affidavit submitted by detectives from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the two met on Snapchat and started an intimate relationship shortly after back in March of 2020. It is reported that Tyson and the 14-year-old girl did illicit drugs together and had sexual relations during every encounter.

They thought they were the perfect match, the girl told Tyson she liked older guys and he told her that her age excited him and turned him on. Tyson reportedly told the girl he was 22 but the girl later found out he was 29. The girl reports that she was happy in the relationship until she found out he was cheating on her. The girl then broke up with Tyson around June of 2020.

Then, in August of 2020, the girl, who has since turned 15, gave a statement to PBSO detectives about the illegal romance. The girl then cooperated with investigators by engaging in text communications with Tyson. Detectives then documented the events that transpired by monitoring the communications between Tyson and the girl. After several “I miss u” texts followed by some very raunchy messages, and a photo of Tyson’s genitalia, detectives decided they had enough probable cause to make an arrest.

Michael Douglas Tyson was arrested on April 1st, 2021, and spent about a week in the PBSO jail. Today, he returns to jail as his trial is finished. The State graciously offered Tyson a lesser charge to which he plead guilty. Tyson is now off to the custody of the Florida Department of Corrections where we will serve a two-year sentence for the new reduced charge.

It is unclear at this time if Tyson will be required to register as a sex offender once he gets out of prison. He will, however, be on probation for two years. According to court records, Tyson will also be required to undergo a psychosexual evaluation as well as provide two DNA samples.

Mike Tyson was originally charged with:

  • 800.04(4A1B) LEWD OR LASCIVIOUS BATTERY
  • 847.0138(2) TRANSMISSION OF MATERIAL HARMFUL TO MINORS
