FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Fort Lauderdale police say they have arrested a juvenile suspect in the shooting death of a 17-year-old on the beachfront just before the new year.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department announced Sunday that homicide detectives identified Marquice Trevon Henry as the suspect in the New Year’s Eve homicide that killed Joshua Gipson, 17. Investigators say Henry was located and taken into custody Saturday, Jan. 10, after what the department described as an extensive and ongoing investigation.

Police said the arrest was made “without incident” after the Fort Lauderdale Police Department Fugitive Unit, working alongside the U.S. Marshals Service, located Henry and apprehended him.

The case stems from a late-night call on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025, when officers were sent to the unit block of North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard for a reported shooting. Police said officers arriving at the scene found a juvenile male suffering from a gunshot wound.

Tactical medical aid was provided at the scene, according to police, and the area was secured as first responders worked to stabilize the victim. The victim was taken as a trauma alert by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue to Broward General Medical Center for treatment.

Police said the teen later died from his injuries.

The department’s update did not describe what led up to the shooting, whether anyone else was present, or whether a weapon has been recovered. It also did not detail the suspect’s current legal status beyond the arrest announcement, including where the suspect is being held or what charges have been filed as of the time of the department’s release.

What happens next now moves through two tracks: detectives continue to build out the timeline and supporting evidence, while the case proceeds through the juvenile justice process based on the suspect’s age. Police emphasized that the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective J. Sanchez of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department Homicide Unit at 954-828-4900. Tips can also be provided anonymously through Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).

For residents across South Florida, the location matters here. North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard is a heavily trafficked corridor, especially around the holiday period, with high pedestrian activity and late-night crowds. Police have not said whether this shooting was targeted, random, tied to an argument, or connected to any larger incident, and the department has not released any witness descriptions. That leaves a gap investigators may still be working to close, particularly if there were bystanders, vehicles, or surveillance cameras in the area around 11:30 p.m.

The department’s announcement framed the arrest as a step toward accountability for the victim and family, while making clear they are still seeking information. In cases like this, additional witness statements, video, and corroborating tips can shape what charges are ultimately pursued and what details become part of the public record as the case advances.

For now, the key update from police is straightforward: they say they have a named suspect in custody, and they are still asking the public for help as detectives continue the work behind the scenes.
