The man a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy shot during a Wednesday afternoon welfare check west of Delray Beach has been identified as Alexander Bucspun, 23, according to a PBSO booking record.
Bucspun was booked into the Palm Beach County jail at 10:49 p.m. on July 15 on two aggravated assault counts, jail records show. He remained at Delray Medical Center at the time of booking, listed by the jail as his cell location.
According to the booking record, Bucspun is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill under Florida Statute 784.021(1)(a), and with aggravated assault on specified personnel under Florida Statute 784.07(2)(c), a provision that applies when the victim is a law enforcement officer or other specified public employee. Both charges are listed with no bond.
The booking record lists Bucspun's home address as the 15000 block of Jackson Road, the same block where PBSO said the shooting occurred.
PBSO said deputies responded to the 15000 block of Jackson Road around 1:40 p.m. on July 15 for a welfare check. When they arrived, they encountered a man holding a shotgun, and when he saw the deputies, he raised the shotgun and pointed it at them, according to a media advisory from PBSO PIO Eric S. Davis. One deputy fired, striking him.
Deputies rendered aid until Palm Beach County Fire Rescue arrived, and Bucspun was transported to an area hospital, PBSO said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney's Office responded to the scene, and FDLE will handle the investigation of the deputy's use of force. That is the standard process in Florida for law enforcement shootings. PBSO described the shooting investigation as open and ongoing.
PBSO has not released the name or assignment of the deputy who fired, and has not said whether the deputy has been placed on administrative leave.
The 15000 block of Jackson Road is in the Country Club Acres subdivision in unincorporated Palm Beach County, near Military Trail and Atlantic Avenue, west of Delray Beach city limits. It falls under PBSO jurisdiction.
The initial PBSO advisory did not say who requested the welfare check, what prompted it, or whether anyone else was inside the home. Bucspun's first appearance and formal condition update from the hospital were not available at the time of publication.
