Severe Weather Alert - Saturday, June 20, 2026
BOCA RATON, FL — Boca Raton and the surrounding Palm Beach County area are getting a brief break from the most serious storm threat, but not from storm impacts. At 6:08 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service in Miami cancelled a severe thunderstorm warning for east-central Palm Beach County after the storm weakened. Even so, residents should expect pockets of heavy rain, lightning, and occasional gusty winds through the evening as slow-moving thunderstorms continue to pop up across South Florida.
The warning was cancelled because the storm “weakened below severe limits,” according to the NWS Severe Weather Statement. That does not mean the storm is harmless.
Summer thunderstorms can still produce sudden wind gusts strong enough to knock down small branches, blow around unsecured patio furniture, and make driving difficult—especially on I-95, Florida’s Turnpike, and major east-west routes where visibility can drop quickly in downpours. If you hear thunder, move indoors immediately; lightning can strike well away from the heaviest rain.
The broader setup remains favorable for additional storms. The NWS Area Forecast Discussion notes a moist, unstable air mass with weak storm motion—meaning storms may drift slowly and linger over the same neighborhoods.
That raises the risk of brief street flooding in poor-drainage areas, especially where drains are clogged by debris. Residents in Boca Raton should be prepared for rapid changes: a quiet sky can turn stormy in minutes, and heavy rain can overwhelm roads quickly.
