OAKLAND PARK, FL — A developing BSO incident in Broward County ended with a deputy-involved shooting after deputies spent hours trying to get a barricaded suspect to surrender, according to the BSO Public Information Office.
BSO said the call began shortly before 6 p.m. Friday, May 29, when Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a man armed with a knife in the 800 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard in Oakland Park.
BSO deputies responded along with Oakland Park Fire Rescue. On scene, BSO said the suspect retreated into an apartment and barricaded himself inside. Surrounding apartments were evacuated as a precaution.
BSO said its K-9, SWAT and Violent Crimes unit responded to the scene. The agency described the situation as a barricaded subject incident and said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
In an update, BSO said deputies spent several hours attempting to communicate with the suspect and have him surrender peacefully. At some point during the response, deputies made contact with the individual and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported the suspect to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment, BSO said. No other injuries were reported.
After the shooting, deputies conducted safety sweeps, BSO said, to ensure residents could safely return to their homes.
Authority for the criminal investigation is with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which BSO said is investigating the circumstances of the shooting. Separately, BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an internal investigation.
BSO said a Public Information Officer was expected to be on scene at about 11:30 p.m.
