BROWARD COUNTY, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — North Lauderdale police and traffic investigators are working a fatal hit-and-run that happened early March 15 on North State Road 7, with an arrest now made by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

BSO Traffic Homicide Unit detectives said the crash happened at about 2:15 a.m. near the 5500 block of North State Road 7. Detectives responded to a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.

BSO’s preliminary on-scene investigation found Maurice Scott was driving a 2021 Infiniti Q50 southbound on North State Road 7 when the vehicle struck Pedro Lopez Montejo. Detectives said Montejo was crossing North State Road 7 in an area where there is no crosswalk.

According to investigators, Scott got out of the vehicle after the crash, looked at Montejo lying on the roadway, then returned to the Infiniti and left the scene.

BSO said Traffic Homicide Unit detectives identified Scott as the driver through investigative means. Investigators later located Scott and took him into custody.

Scott faces one charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and another charge of tampering with evidence.

The case is being handled by BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit. Residents who drive or walk along North State Road 7 should expect the investigation to remain with BSO traffic homicide detectives as the case moves forward through the court process.
