UPDATE: Fort Lauderdale Police Name Officers, Gunman in Valentine’s Day Officer-Involved Shooting
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Fort Lauderdale Police have identified the man shot and killed by officers during an officer-involved shooting Saturday, Feb. 14, as Luis Felipe Londono Ospina, born March 10, 1982, a resident of the City of Fort Lauderdale.
Police said the investigation remains active.
The shooting happened after officers were dispatched to a disturbance call in a residential area off Chateau Park Drive at around 12:30 p.m.
While officers were on scene addressing that call, police said an armed adult male approached them. Police said the man was not involved in the original disturbance that brought officers to the area.
In an update dated Feb. 17, police clarified the initial disturbance officers were dispatched to was a routine, unrelated verbal dispute with no known connection to Ospina. Police said Ospina was not involved in that dispute and there is no ongoing investigation into the disturbance that generated the call for service.
Police have said that during an encounter with officers, the suspect fired a weapon. Police said three Fort Lauderdale Police officers then discharged their department-issued firearms, striking the suspect, based on the department’s initial review.
Police said officers immediately began life-saving measures and continued those efforts until Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived. The suspect was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
In the initial information released after the shooting, police did not provide the suspect’s name, and did not release details about what prompted the original disturbance call, how close the suspect was to officers when he fired, or whether anyone else was injured. Police also did not provide additional details about the weapon, the number of shots fired, or what evidence may have been recovered at the scene.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation into the shooting, which police described as standard protocol for an officer-involved shooting. Police have said FDLE’s role is to conduct an independent review of the use of force, collect evidence, and present findings to the appropriate authorities as the review process moves forward.
Separately, Fort Lauderdale Police said it is conducting an internal review of the incident. Under department policy, police said the three involved officers were placed on administrative leave with pay while that internal review is pending.

Police have treated the man who was shot as the suspect in the encounter based on the department’s statement that he fired his weapon during the incident. The department’s Feb. 17 update naming Ospina did not change that account, and police said the case remains an ongoing and active investigation.
