BROWARD COUNTY, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2024) — The detectives from the Threat Management Unit at the Broward Sheriff’s Office collaborated with law enforcement agencies to apprehend a 14 year old student, from a local high school on Saturday night for making written threats of violence including mass shooting or killings.

Detectives stated that the student shared stories on Instagram last Saturday afternoon with threatening content in them. The posts included a list of schools in Broward County that were mentioned as potential targets, for violent acts. Other posts also featured threats of a school shooting or other violent incidents. These alarming posts were seen by individuals online who promptly reported them to the authorities.

BSOs TMU and Real Time Crime Center detectives collaborated with law enforcement officials from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and Plantation Police Department well as Broward County Public Schools Police officers in addition to BSOs Lauderdale Lakes District and BSOs TITAN (Threat Intervention Tactics Analytics Network). Together they conducted an investigation into the threats using investigative techniques which led them to a 14 year old girl, from Lauderdale Lakes as the source of the threats. Upon being presented with this information by detectives during questioning sessions she admitted to making the threats while clarifying that she had meant them in jest.

After being arrested she was brought to the Juvenile Assessment Center for processing. The charges, against her include making written threats of violence or planning a mass shooting, possession of devices and misusing a communication device to convey these threats.

The community is reminded by BSO that such threats are treated seriously and will be thoroughly investigated; they could lead to charges as well. Moreover if anyone comes across or hears of threats it’s important to report them promptly to the authorities or submit them through the SaferWatch app, which can be downloaded at no cost.
