BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) — A couple walked into Macy’s in Boca Town Center Mall and stole more than $800 dollars worth of fragrances in only 120 seconds before they were caught by Macy’s Loss Prevention personnel and later arrested by Boca Raton Police Department.

It is unclear why the loss prevention personnel immediately turned their attention to two as soon as they walked into the store, but they did. The reporting officer’s narrative documents the incident as follows:

On 06/16/22 at about 1209 hours, I responded to 5700 W Glades Rd (Macy’s) reference a black male and black female in the custody of Loss Prevention for retail theft.

Upon arrival, I spoke with the witness and Loss Prevention Officer, Juan Rodriguez who said the following: At 1202 he witnessed (via CCTV) an unknown black male and black female (later identified as Cory Hutchins – 7/16/84 and Shunta McGrady – 5/12/65) enter the South doors of Macy’s. Hutchins was described as: large build, 5’11”, and wearing a black jacket with matching black shorts and a blue mask. McGrady was described as medium build, 5’6″, wearing a pink dress, pink sliders, and a blue mask.

They briefly stopped in the Men’s Department and then proceeded directly to the Fragrance Department where they made sure they were not being watched prior to selecting and concealing multiple fragrance gift sets (total of $839.00). They concealed the fragrance sets in bags that they were carrying.

Note: Hutchins removed a white plastic Macy’s bag from his shorts used to conceal some items while McGrady used a large blue plastic nylon shoulder bag for the rest. They then proceed back to the South doors exiting the store at 1204 hours passing all points of sale without attempting to pay.

Once outside the LPO Team successfully stopped both subjects, identified themselves as LPO’s and escorted them back to their office awaiting police assistance. Note: while awaiting police LPO Rodriguez located a steel pair of wire cutters with red handles in McGrady’s bag which were removed prior to police arrival for personal/officer safety.

I reviewed the CCTV footage and confirmed LPO Rodriguez’s observations to be true. A copy of the CCTV was provided along with a sworn written statement and a receipt of stolen merchandise for evidence.

I then read both Cory Hutchins and Shunta McGradytheir respective Constitutional Rights from a department-issued card. Post Miranda Warning, Cory Hutchins stated, “I came to get a few boxes to pay some bills.” When asked to clarify if by “Get” he meant take or steal, Hutchins refused further.

Hutchins was advised that he was under arrest and placed in handcuffs (double-locked and checked for tightness). Post Miranda Warning, Shunta McGrady refused to speak about the details of this investigation. McGrady was advised that she was under arrest and placed in handcuffs (double-locked and checked for tightness).

I collected the large blue nylon bag and white plastic Macys as evidence. Both subjects were charged with a violation of FSS*s 812.015(8) – Felony Retail Theft of merchandise greater than $750 and 812.015(8c) – Retail Theft in Concert with one or more individuals within one or more establishments. Shunta McGradywasadditionally charged with a
violation of FSS 812.015(7) – for Possession of a Countermeasure Device (Wire cutters).

Both Hutchins and McGrady were transported to BPRDfor processing prior to being released to PBCJ.

Shunta McGrady, 57, of Riviera Beach, was charged with the following:

  • 812.014 2C1 (FT)LARC – GRAND THEFT 750 LESS THAN 5K DOLS
  • 812.015 8C (FT)LARC – RETAIL THEFT 750 MORE DOLS MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

Cory Hutchins, 37, of West Palm Beach, was charged with the following:
