OAKLAND PARK, FL — A deputy-involved shooting in Broward County is under investigation after BSO deputies shot a man armed with knives during a confrontation Friday in Oakland Park.
Shortly before 6 p.m. Friday, May 29, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a disturbance involving a male subject armed with knives in the 800 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard, according to BSO. Detectives said a preliminary investigation found the suspect was threatening residents.
BSO identified the suspect as Kevin Dominick Almonte. Deputies responded to the scene and Almonte retreated into an apartment and barricaded himself, BSO said.
BSO said deputies secured the area and evacuated nearby residents after Almonte made threats about possessing firearms, propane tanks and bombs inside the apartment. BSO’s K-9, SWAT team and Violent Crimes Unit responded. An arrest warrant was later issued, according to BSO. Oakland Park Fire Rescue also responded.
Deputies spent several hours trying to communicate with Almonte and get him to exit the residence peacefully, BSO said.
At some point during the encounter, BSO said Almonte, armed with knives, advanced toward deputies and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue began life-saving measures and transported Almonte to Broward Health Medical Center, according to BSO. He was pronounced deceased a short time later at the hospital. No other injuries were reported.
After the shooting, deputies conducted safety sweeps to ensure residents could safely return to their homes, BSO said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the circumstances of the deputy-involved shooting. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, and BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review.
Under BSO policy, the deputy who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
For residents, the key points are that the scene involved an evacuation and a barricaded subject, and that multiple investigations are now underway. FDLE is the outside agency handling the shooting investigation, while BSO units are conducting both the criminal-case work and the internal administrative review. Any next updates are expected to come through those agencies as the investigations continue.
