Severe Weather Alert - Friday, May 29, 2026
BOCA RATON, FL — South Florida is dealing with an active evening of storms, and the National Weather Service has extended a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 9 p.m. Friday for northern Broward and southwestern Palm Beach counties. At 8:36 p.m., the storm was located near Holey Land Wildlife Refuge—about 18 miles south of Belle Glade—moving east at around 10 mph, putting communities from the western preserves toward the metro corridor on alert as conditions can deteriorate quickly.
The primary threats are large hail and damaging wind. The NWS is warning of ping-pong ball size hail (up to 1.50 inches) and wind gusts up to 60 mph.
That combination can shatter windows, dent vehicles, and damage roofs and siding, while strong gusts can bring down tree limbs and knock around unsecured outdoor items. People and pets caught outside are at risk of injury from hail and flying debris.
While the warning polygon is focused on northern Broward and southwestern Palm Beach, Boca Raton residents should pay close attention tonight. Storms are moving east, and severe cells can intensify or shift as they approach more populated areas.
If you hear thunder, treat it as a sign to move inside immediately—hail can fall well ahead of the heaviest rain, and wind gusts can arrive suddenly. Recommended actions are straightforward and urgent: move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
