POMPANO BEACH, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2024) — Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detectives have apprehended Emmanuel Prevaly, 34, for killing an unborn child of a pregnant woman in a violent attack.

As per the findings of the homicide unit investigators, at approximately 12;41 a.m. On Friday, February 23rd, a report was received by Broward County Regional Communications regarding a pregnant woman being assaulted by a masked individual with a baseball bat in the 1200 block of South Dixie Highway West in Pompano Beach. Witnesses nearby heard the victim’s cries for help and rushed to her aid. The assailant then fled from the scene. One witness managed to catch up with him and held him down until deputies from BSO Pompano Beach District arrived.

After this violent incident, Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported the victim, who was approximately 22 weeks pregnant at that time, to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

Special Victim’s Unit detectives from BSO launched an investigation into this matter. It was revealed that as the victim was walking back to her apartment after getting something from her car, Prevaly approached her and viciously attacked her with a baseball bat while repeatedly kicking her stomach. When she attempted to use her cellphone to seek assistance, it fell down and was taken by Prevaly.
Prevaly, a familiar acquaintance of the victim, was taken into custody on February 23, the same day as the incident, on charges related to attempted felony murder and preventing the victim from contacting emergency services. He was then transferred to Broward County Main Jail where he has been held since.

Subsequent investigations uncovered that following the incident, medical professionals were unable to detect any signs of life in the unborn child, who was later pronounced deceased.

Collaboration between BSO’s Homicide Unit, Broward State Attorney’s Office and Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office led to a conclusion by the ME’s Office that the unborn child’s death resulted from multiple blunt force injuries. Consequently, on Thursday, February 29th, Prevaly faced an additional charge of causing harm to an unborn child. He is currently detained at Broward County Main Jail without bail.

Prevaly is currently facing the following charges:

  • Attempted Felony Murder – Specified Felony
  • Tampering W/witness Evade Legal Process Non-crim P
  • Injure Mother & Kill Unborn Child – 1st Degree
  • Wear Mask While Committing 2 Deg Felony
