LAKE WORTH BEACH, FL (Boca Post) — A 49-year-old man has been killed after being hit by a car while crossing Congress Ave on his bicycle in Lake Worth Beach.

An investigator with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office says that Madison Thamarus, 19, was traveling northbound in a Kia Sorento on South Congress Avenue in the outer lane approaching 6th Avenue South when traffic in front of Thamarus began to abruptly slow to a stop due to a bicyclist improperly crossing South Congress Ave from east to west.

The bicyclist, later identified as Owen Lenard, 49, was only 350 feet outside of the nearest marked crosswalk, as approaching traffic had a green traffic signal.

In an attempt to avoid impact with traffic in front of her, Thamarus slowed and swerved to the left entering the middle lane striking Lenard with the left side of her vehicle, and throwing Lenard from his bicycle and onto the roadway. Lenard was brought to a controlled stop shortly after the impact. Lenard was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center where he later died.
