MIAMI, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was stabbed and a woman was shot early Saturday, March 7, during a wrong-way driver response on State Road 836 in Miami-Dade County, according to the agency.

The incident unfolded around 5:30 a.m. near Northwest 107th Avenue, where troopers were sent to reports of a reckless driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of SR 836, also known as the Dolphin Expressway. For South Florida drivers, wrong-way calls on major highways are treated as urgent because they can quickly turn into fatal head-on crashes, especially before sunrise when visibility is lower and traffic patterns are uneven.

A trooper located the vehicle in the grassy center median of SR 836 and approached it. Inside was a female driver and a young child.

During that encounter, the woman pulled a knife and stabbed the trooper in the head, neck, and shoulder, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The trooper then fired his weapon, striking the woman.

Both were taken to HCA Kendall Trauma for treatment. The Florida Highway Patrol did not release the conditions of either the trooper or the woman in the information provided Saturday morning.

Investigators later determined the woman had active warrants for child neglect, child abuse, and fleeing and eluding law enforcement. Authorities said she will be booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail once she is medically cleared for release from the hospital.

The child who was in the vehicle was taken into the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families. No age or identifying details about the child were released.

The case now moves along two tracks, which is standard in a shooting involving law enforcement. The Florida Highway Patrol said it is continuing the criminal investigation into the woman’s actions during the encounter. Separately, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is reviewing the trooper’s use of force, a routine step after an officer-involved shooting in Florida.

Florida Highway Patrol said no further comment would be released while the criminal investigation remains active.

For residents and commuters, the case is a reminder of how quickly highway response calls can escalate, particularly those involving wrong-way drivers. It is also likely to remain under review as investigators document the encounter, the trooper’s injuries, the circumstances leading up to the stabbing, and the presence of the child inside the vehicle.

No names had been released in the information provided. No additional charges beyond the active warrants were announced Saturday morning, though investigators indicated the woman is expected to be jailed once she leaves the hospital.
