DELRAY BEACH, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — A fatal train-pedestrian incident shut down a wide stretch of Delray Beach Sunday morning, including Atlantic Avenue, and tied up traffic for hours.

Police say a southbound freight train on the Florida East Coast Railway tracks struck a pedestrian near SE 4th Street around 9:00 a.m. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

It happened just south of downtown, near one of the busier crossings, as the morning commute was already thinning out but traffic was still steady. Trains continued to pass earlier in the day. Then everything stopped.

Roads were closed between SE 4th Street and NE 10th Street while investigators worked the scene. That closure included Atlantic Avenue, forcing drivers to detour north or south and clogging side streets as cars backed up through nearby neighborhoods.

Officers urged motorists to avoid the area, use alternate routes, and expect delays. Initially, closures were expected to remain in place until at least 12:30 p.m.

Just after midday, City of Delray Beach officials announced the scene had been cleared. All affected roads were reopened shortly afterward.

No details have been released about the pedestrian, and investigators have not said what led up to the collision. That part is still being looked at.

For now, traffic is moving again. The questions remain.
