Man Arrested Following Fatal Shooting

Police officers from the Broward Sheriffs Homicide Unit worked together with investigators from BSOs K Nine unit and Aviation unit alongside the unit to apprehend Kenneth Philpart Jr., aged 19 years old for the tragic shooting incident involving Jonathan Isaiah Johnson also aged 19 years old on different charges unrelated to the shooting incident that occurred in the evening of Saturday on March 1st near the area of Southwest 14th Street, in Deerfield Beach. At around 7;18 in the evening on that day as per investigators findings; Broward County Regional Communications got word of a man carrying a firearm in proximity to Southwest 14th Streets 900 block area. Upon receiving this report from Broward County Regional Communications; BSO Deerfield Beach deputies swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation. During their presence at the location; deputies heard a gunshot and later found Johnson a short distance away, with what seemed to be a gunshot wound. Responding promptly to this incident; Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue team transported Johnson to Broward Health North where he was sadly declared deceased upon arrival. While the deputies were setting up a boundary around the area BSO Aviation spotted Philpart Jr., dressed in his underwear and clutching a firearm near the 1300 block of Southwest Sixth Terrace. Following this sighting of Philpart Jr. he attempted to escape from the deputies. Was eventually found hiding inside a garbage bin with the help of BSOs K unit and aerial support, from Aviation. Subsequently apprehended by law enforcement Philpart Jr. Was then taken to the hospital for assessment. Investigators have reported that Philpart Jr. Claimed he acted in self defense during the shooting incident. He is charged with possessing a firearm as an adjudicated delinquent and fentanyl with the intent to sell it along with having a firearm during a felony and improperly displaying it while also resisting an officer without violence.A decision, on homicide charges will be made by the Broward County State Attorneys Office once the investigation is complete.The investigation is ongoing.
