OAKLAND PARK, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2024) — A driver was taken into custody after a tragic accident involving a pedestrian occurred in Oakland Park. The incident, which took place on June 10, 2024, at 5;27 p.m. On Oakland Park Blvd., led to the death of the pedestrian, William Thomas Magee. The driver, identified as Derrick Lamar Ferguson, faced multiple felony charges following the collision. According to reports, emergency responders were called to the scene where they found Magee with severe injuries. Initial findings suggest that Ferguson was behind the wheel of a Dodge Caravan traveling westbound near the United States Postal Service office on Oakland Park Blvd.

When the driver lost control while navigating a curve in the parking lot driveway, a tragic accident occurred. The vehicle driven by Ferguson collided with a pedestrian named Magee and proceeded westward through a fence and bushes with Magee on the hood before crashing into a gas pump at the neighboring Shell gas station. As a result of the collision, Magee fell to the ground.

Magee was rushed by paramedics to Broward Health Medical Center where he was sadly pronounced dead.

During the on site investigation of the accident, deputies instructed Ferguson to move away from the Dodge Caravan. Subsequently, detectives reported that Ferguson entered the vehicle at some point and retrieved an item before trying to flee on foot. Deputies chased after him and took him into custody. Upon searching Ferguson, deputies found a loaded firearm in his waistband and a bag of narcotics in his pocket. The narcotics tested positive for fentanyl and cocaine.

Ferguson was apprehended on multiple charges including DUI resulting in death, repeat DUI offense, leaving the scene of an accident involving death, possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute while armed and resisting arrest without violence.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
