MARGATE, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2025) — A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy is alive today because of a ballistic vest after being shot by a suspect during a multi-agency investigation that stretched across several Broward cities. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the deputy-involved shooting.

The incident began at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Seminole Police Department. Seminole police requested assistance from BSO in attempting to apprehend a suspect wanted in a strong-armed robbery.

BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team and Aviation Unit responded and assisted with tracking the suspect as he fled. The pursuit moved through North Lauderdale and into the City of Margate, according to investigators.

The encounter ended in a residential neighborhood in Margate. Deputies located the suspect, identified as Carlos Robinson, and attempted to take him into custody. Investigators say deputies issued commands for Robinson to exit his vehicle and worked to deescalate the situation, including the use of less-lethal methods. Robinson did not comply.

Authorities say Robinson was armed and opened fire on deputies. One BSO deputy assigned to the North Lauderdale district was struck by gunfire. The deputy’s ballistic vest absorbed the impact, preventing life-threatening injuries.

Deputies returned fire, striking Robinson. The Margate Police Department’s SWAT team then moved in and took Robinson into custody. First responders immediately rendered medical aid at the scene.

Both the injured deputy and Robinson were transported to the hospital. The deputy was treated and later released. Robinson also received medical treatment. No other deputies or residents were injured during the incident, according to law enforcement.

Robinson now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting into an occupied dwelling, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting arrest with violence. Investigators also confirmed Robinson had an active warrant out of Palm Beach County at the time of the incident.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved shooting, as is standard procedure in cases involving the use of deadly force by law enforcement.

Separately, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is conducting its own internal investigations. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are reviewing the events that led up to the shooting. BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit has also opened an administrative review.

Six deputies who fired their weapons during the encounter have been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigations. Administrative assignment is a routine step and does not imply wrongdoing.

Authorities noted that additional details regarding the robbery that initiated the incident remain under the jurisdiction of the Seminole Police Department. Anyone seeking more information about the initial robbery investigation has been directed to contact Seminole police.

The investigation remains ongoing.
