BOYNTON BEACH, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2023) — All northbound and southbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike are shut down near Boynton Beach.

UPDATE

Earlier this morning, firefighters from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded to a reported explosion and a significant fire involving a fuel tanker on the northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike, near the Hypoluxo overpass, just before 6 am. Fortunately, there were no injuries as the driver of the tanker managed to escape unharmed.

The crash caused the tanker to split open, resulting in an active fire fueled by the leaking diesel fuel and gasoline. The flames produced a large plume of black smoke visible from quite a distance. For safety reasons, both sides of the highway were closed off by firefighters and FHP.

Taking charge at the scene was PBCFR’s Special Operations Team, specializing in handling hazardous materials (HazMat) and performing technical rescues. They swiftly constructed barriers to contain the fuel and prevent further spread of the fire. Employing water and foam, they effectively tackled the flames despite facing challenges due to the substantial amount of fuel involved. PBCFR had deployed 18 units/trucks with numerous firefighters working tirelessly to bring this massive fire under control.
After the fire was extinguished and the authorities determined that the area was safe, PBCFR collaborated with FHP to reopen the roads. The DEP and DOT will be present at the scene to evaluate any damages. Please anticipate ongoing delays throughout the morning.

UPDATE

The fire is out. One lane has been opened. Traffic is still very slow.

UPDATE

Currently, PBCFR has several engines that are unable to reach the scene due to the blocked traffic and construction barricades. Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue units are also responding.

UPDATE

PBCFR confirms that the driver of the truck was located and is uninjured. This is still a very active scene.

UPDATE

Firefighters working a tanker fire this am near the Hypoluxo overpass area. The fire had spread to both sides of the highway. Traffic cannot get through at this time – blocked for safety reasons.
