BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Drivers who use Florida’s Turnpike through the Boca Raton area should expect an active construction zone taking shape north and south of Glades Road as a major widening project begins along the Turnpike mainline in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

As shown in aerial video footage, the tree line along the canal on Boca Rio Road has been cleared as crews begin early work on the Turnpike widening project.

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has started construction activities tied to a Transportation Systems Management and Operations project on Florida’s Turnpike/State Road 91, covering the segment from south of the Sawgrass Expressway/State Road 869 interchange to north of Glades Road/State Road 808. Within those limits, the project runs from milepost 71 to milepost 76.

The early work now underway includes crews clearing vegetation and hauling materials, setting the stage for roadway widening and future noise wall construction in areas that qualify. The goal is straightforward: add a new travel lane in each direction of the Turnpike mainline to increase capacity and reduce congestion in a corridor that serves commuters and regional traffic moving through West Boca and the broader South Florida spine.

The project is estimated to cost about $100 million and is expected to continue through 2029.

Beyond the added lanes, the scope includes a package of safety and operations upgrades meant to make the corridor more predictable for drivers. Plans call for new roadway lighting, updated signage, fresh pavement markings, and upgrades to the Turnpike’s intelligent transportation system, the network of tools used to support traffic flow and incident response.

For nearby neighborhoods, another piece of the project is the planned construction of sound barrier walls in qualifying residential areas. The Turnpike fact sheet describes the noise walls as a measure to reduce traffic noise where the project meets criteria for installation.

As the work ramps up, residents and businesses along the corridor may notice construction activity during both daytime and nighttime hours. The Turnpike Enterprise notes that nearby areas can experience occasional impacts from construction-related light, noise, vibration, or dust as the job progresses. Lane closures are expected at times, with closures generally scheduled during off-peak hours to limit disruption for drivers.

The Turnpike Enterprise said closure information will be provided in advance through its South Florida Weekly Lane Closures and Work Zone Advisory.

For Boca Raton-area drivers, the practical takeaway is that this is a long-duration build that will evolve in phases. The earliest visible activity may look like preparation work, but it is tied to a broader widening plan that, over time, will reshape how the Turnpike carries traffic between Broward County and the Glades Road area in Palm Beach County.

Motorists should watch for changes in traffic patterns, posted construction signage, and periodic overnight or off-peak lane closures as crews move from clearing and staging into the widening work itself. For residents near the corridor, the noise wall component is expected to be constructed along qualifying stretches as the project advances.
