BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) — The Florida Department of Health has confirmed that a person was bit by a raccoon and later verified that the raccoon does in fact have Rabies.

The incident occurred on Thursday night, 12/2/21, on the 10000 block of Marina Way in the Sandalfoot neighborhood of West Boca Raton.

Palm Beach County Animal Control captured the animal and sent it to a lab to be tested where it was later confirmed by The Florida Department of Health to in fact have Rabies.

FDOH recommends that you and your family stay away from wild animals including feral cats and to report any suspicious animal behavior to PBC Animal Control.

What is Rabies?

It is a disease of the central nervous system that can be fatal to humans and animals if left untreated. Rabies is treated in humans with specific immune globulin. Treatment must be started immediately or as soon as possible after the exposure. The FDOH provides the following tips:

  • Keep pet’s rabies vaccinations up to date
  • Always supervise your pets. If a pet is bitten by a wild animal seek veterinary assistance asap. Notify PBC Animal Care & Control ASAP at 561-233-1200
  • Notify PBC Animal Care & Control to remove stray animals from your property
  • Do not touch, feed, or engage with wildlife
  • Try not to attract wildlife with feeders, garbage cans, etc
  • Teach your children to never touch wild or unfamiliar animals
  • Prevent bats from living in your dwellings
