BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2026) — Expect a warm, humid, mostly cloudy Sunday with several rounds of showers and thunderstorms, especially from late morning through the afternoon and early evening. Some storms may produce heavy rain in a short time, leading to localized street flooding in poor-drainage spots. A few storms could also bring brief damaging wind gusts and small hail. At the beach, a high rip current risk is posted today, so use extra caution and swim near lifeguards only
South Florida remains in an active, storm-friendly pattern today, and Boca Raton is right in the middle of it. The National Weather Service notes a disturbance aloft moving in from the Gulf while stronger winds higher up in the atmosphere overspread the peninsula.
At the same time, the boundary that had been sitting near the area is lifting north, allowing a steady south to southeast breeze to keep pulling warm, humid air into Palm Beach County. That combination matters for two reasons: it increases the amount of moisture available for downpours, and it helps storms grow taller and stronger than a typical March shower.
Forecast moisture levels are unusually high for this time of year, and the Weather Service highlights the potential for 1 to 2 inches of rain in many places today, with a small chance that a few isolated spots could see several inches if storms repeatedly track over the same area. Timing-wise, storms may begin developing along the east coast metro area by mid-morning, then become more widespread and on-and-off through the afternoon as activity shifts inland and then back toward the coast.
The main local impact is heavy rain and lightning, but the atmosphere also supports a few stronger storms later today. While widespread severe weather is not expected, a couple storms could produce brief damaging wind gusts and even small hail.
Boaters and beachgoers should plan for unsettled conditions. Today, southeast winds run about 10–15 knots with Atlantic seas 3–4 feet (occasionally near 5 feet), and showers and thunderstorms can create sudden bursts of stronger wind and rougher seas.
Tonight into Monday, winds turn more southerly and strengthen, with seas building to 4–6 feet offshore and choppier intracoastal waters. A cold front arrives late Monday into Tuesday, shifting winds to the northwest and north and building seas further (potentially hazardous midweek).
For the coast, the high rip current risk today is a key concern—swim near lifeguards and avoid entering the water alone.
