Boca Raton starts this Sunday on a mostly sunny track, the kind of bright January morning that makes the beaches look busy even before lunch. It won’t be a washout. In fact, most hours should stay dry. Still, don’t totally ignore the radar later in the day.
The National Weather Service forecast for the Boca Raton Airport area calls for a 20% chance of showers after 4 p.m. today. That’s a low probability, and it’s not pointing to an all-afternoon situation. More like a quick, hit-or-miss shower that could clip the I-95 corridor, the Intracoastal side, or even drift toward Glades Road around the evening drive, then move on.
High temperature today is expected to land near 78 degrees, with a mostly sunny sky overhead. Early on, winds are out of the west around 10 mph, but the breeze won’t stay put. As the day goes on, winds are expected to turn north in the afternoon, lining up with a weak frontal boundary sliding down toward South Florida.
The broader setup behind this forecast is pretty straightforward. A weakening front and a mid-level disturbance are moving toward the region, but the atmosphere above the lower levels stays fairly dry, which limits how much rain can actually get going. By later today and into tonight, the wind pattern shifts again. One area to keep an eye on today is not over land, but offshore. The marine forecast notes a brief period of potentially hazardous winds for offshore Palm Beach waters through this morning, with winds shifting to the northwest and increasing to moderate speeds on the Atlantic side as the front approaches. If you’re heading out from Boca Inlet, Deerfield, or up toward Jupiter Inlet, conditions could be rougher than they look from the beach.
For the coastal waters from Jupiter Inlet to Deerfield Beach out 20 nautical miles, the advisory states “Small Craft Should Exercise Caution.” Today’s marine forecast calls for west winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots, becoming north this afternoon, and seas 2 to 3 feet. Tonight, winds remain 10 to 15 knots before easing later, while seas build to 2 to 4 feet, occasionally to 5 feet. That’s not extreme, but it’s enough to make for a bumpy ride, especially for smaller boats.
