Woman Killed Following High Speed Chase In North Broward, Teen Charged

POMPANO BEACH, FL (Boca Post) (Copyright © 2024) — A woman is dead and 6 others injured following a high speed chase in Pompano Beach on Friday night.

The Broward Sheriffs Office Traffic Homicide Unit is currently investigating a two vehicle accident that resulted in the death of a woman on Friday May 10th, in Pompano Beach.

Initial findings suggest that after 11 p.m. That evening a 17 year old male was driving a 2016 Dodge Charger sedan while being chased by the Hallandale Beach Police Department following a carjacking incident in their area.

The Dodge Charger was heading northbound on I 95 when it exited at West Copans Road and attempted to turn left onto the westbound lane despite the light. At the time Patricia Schmelz was driving a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe eastbound on West Copans Road towards the I 95 northbound offramp.

As per investigators the Hyundai proceeded through the light and intersection. Subsequently the Dodge Charger ran the light. Collided with the Hyundai on its drivers side in a T bone style crash. Emergency responders from Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived at the scene.

Detectives reported that there were six individuals, in the Dodge Charger who were all detained by BSO deputies and Hallandale Beach police officers. Schmelz was taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead.

Authorities mention that speeding excessively and attempting to evade law enforcement are believed to have played a role, in the accident. The inquiry, into the collision is currently ongoing.
