Traffic Shut Down For Hours. Police Suspect Alcohol Or Drugs Are To Blame.

UPDATE – 6/13/22

Boca Post has been notified that a GoFundMe page has been set up for the surviving victim of this accident, Claudia Agudelo.

We are told that Agudelo has multiple surgeries scheduled to rebuild her badly injured leg. Agudelo has a long road ahead of her.

Claudia’s sister has set up a GoFundMe in which she says, “Her husband passed away at the moment of the accident, leaving my sister with deep pain in her soul and serious physical injuries. My sister suffered a fracture of her left leg, compromising her knee and ankle, sternum, and fractured ribs. So far, she has had two surgeries to try to rebuild her leg. My sister is currently using a wheelchair until her doctor determines that she is able to walk again. For obvious reasons, my sister is not able to work until she’s fully recovered.”

So far, more than $2,600 have been raised for Claudia but she is still facing a long road ahead after this devastating accident.

UPDATE – 4/28/22

Boca Post has been notified of the sad news that the driver, Efrain Garcia-Poveda, has passed away as a result of his injuries. We are told that the other victim, Claudia Agudelo, is still in the hospital and unable to speak.

Original Story – 4/24/22

BOCA RATON, FL (Boca Post) — A critical accident shut down traffic for hours near Military Trail and Boca Delray Boulevard at the entrance of Boca Delray Country Club on Saturday afternoon.

The accident happened after the driver of a 2007 Hona Civic, Efrain Garcia-Poveda, 49, from Plantation, was said to have “lost control of the vehicle” which caused it to veer left. The Civic then collided with a 2011 Honda Odyssey, driven by Aaron Latham, 47, of Boca Raton, who was not injured badly.

The passenger of the Honda Civic, Claudia Agudelo, 47, of Plantation, had to be extricated from the vehicle along with the driver. Both were transported by ground to Delray Medical Center as trauma alerts due to the nature of their injuries.

Sources tell Boca Post that the driver was unresponsive and paramedics had to perform CPR on him.

According to a preliminary accident report from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, investigators suspect drugs and/or alcohol may be to blame.

  1. Wow, I saw this wreck happen yesterday while driving north on military… as I glanced in my rear-view… the golden Honda civic looked like it was gaining speed as it passed a minivan in the middle lane. After checking the traffic ahead of me, I once again looked up at the mirror, the Honda first veered HARD to the right as if the driver dropped something in the vehicle and tried to find it/grab it, losing control due to a high rate of speed. I was surprised to see the driver manage to correct the over-steer but he did so too aggressively and it appeared as though he hadn’t tried to slow down at all.. I couldn’t understand why not just hit the brakes.

Next thing you saw was the car over-steering again but this time to the left; again at high speed, it went over the curb and into oncoming traffic… one car managed to dodge the Honda while the minivan had no chance and probably didn’t even see them until impact. The whole thing played out like a scene out of a video game.

  2. Good afternoon, I thank you for what you wrote giving testimony of what happened in that accident. Unfortunately the person who caused the accident was my cousin, I said it was because he died and his wife is still in the hospital. They did not find drugs or alcohol as the news says, we do not know what really happened, his wife has not been able to speak. If you knows or remembers anything else, please let me know, this is my email: [email protected]. My name is Amparo Gongora. Thank you very much for your help.
