Police Identify Woman Killed In Oakland Park Brightline Train Crash
Update – 6/8/22
The victim has been identified as 84-year-old Liesel Hulden of Coconut Creek. Investigators say she pulled her Buick onto the tracks and stopped as the train approached.
Broward Sheriff’s Office has investigated the accident and provided the following update:
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a fatal collision involving a Brightline train and a motorist that occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Oakland Park.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, Broward Regional Communications received a call regarding a crash involving a Brightline train and a vehicle in the area of North Dixie Highway and Northeast 62nd Street in Oakland Park. BSO deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded.
The preliminary investigation reveals that Liesel Hulden was driving a 2003 Buick Century sedan southbound on North Dixie Highway, intending to turn left to head east on Northeast 62nd Street. As she turned, the railroad warning signals activated and the safety arms began lowering. The driver continued into the westbound lanes of travel, and for an unknown reason, pulled onto the railroad tracks and stopped.
As a Brightline train approached from the south, the train engineer sounded the horn and applied the brakes; however, before the train could stop, the train struck the vehicle and carried the vehicle several hundred feet. The driver was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Investigators remind pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists to stop, look and listen when crossing railroad tracks. When a train is approaching, never go around the lowered safety arms. Do not underestimate the speed of the train. It may be traveling faster and closer than you think. Even if the train engineer sees you, he or she will not be able to stop in time.
