Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a crash that killed a 59-year-old man in unincorporated Central Broward.
According to detectives, at approximately 4:02 p.m., on Tuesday, July 19, Elvys Martinez was driving a 2007 International tow truck and towing a 2012 International box truck heading northbound in the single designated travel lane due to construction. Meanwhile, Ronald Bastian was on a bicycle traveling southbound on the sidewalk adjacent to the northbound lane. According to investigators, as the tow truck passed, it appeared that Bastian clipped a utility pole with his left pedal, lost his balance, and fell.
The on-scene investigation revealed the bicycle landed on the sidewalk next to the pole, while Bastian landed headfirst in the roadway with his feet still on the sidewalk. Bastian fell between the tow truck and the box truck being towed. He was struck by the rear passenger side tires of the box truck. Deputies pronounced Bastian deceased on the scene. The driver of the tow truck is cooperating with investigators. Excessive speed is not considered to be a contributing factor in this crash.
The investigation is pending.
