BOCA RATON, FL – Boca Post (BocaPost.com) — Walmart in West Boca Raton had to terminate and prosecute a former employee for grand theft and organized scheme to defraud.

According to a lengthy police report submitted by a detective with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, a former employee, Karuna Roig, 18, is being charged with Grand Theft and Organized Scheme to Defraud. Roig, who lives on Majestic Woods Way in Sandalfoot Cove, was employed at Walmart in West Boca and is accused of the cash theft of over $2,000 dollars.

According to the police report, an investigation was conducted by Edgar Canales who is the Asset Protection Manager at Walmart responsible for investigating the cash shortages affecting the West Boca Raton Walmart. Canales reports in the police statement that there are 38 documented and video recorded incidents where Roig is allegedly stealing cash. The 38 incidents caused a loss to Walmart a total of $2,071.00.

According to the report, the most common way Roig would steal cash is to ring up a fraudulent cash transaction and pocket the cash. She was observed many times ringing up a lottery item with no customer present and then put the cash aside. She is then later observed via CCTV taking the cash and walking away from the register.

Canales reached out to PBSO and a detective worked with him to assist Walmart in the arrest of Roig. Roig was arrested and booked into PBSO jail on 12/2/21 at 9:25 PM. Roig was released the next day at 3 AM on a $6,000 bond. Roig is facing the following charges:

  • 812.014(2C10) GRAND THEFT
  • 817.034(4A3) ORGANIZED SCHEME TO DEFRAUD

Walmart, like many other retailers, is well known for prosecuting both shoplifters and dishonest employees.
