Boca Raton’s Shawn Strassburger Arrested On More Than 30 Theft & Fraud Charges. Allegedly Shoplifted From Area Lowes And Home Depot Stores. Thousands Of Dollars Of Merchandise Pawned Same Day.

Home Improvement Bandit: Boca Raton Man Arrested, Habitual Offender Charged With 30+ Counts Of Theft, Shawn Strassburger

BOCA RATON, FL – Boca Post (BocaPost.com) — A Boca Raton man is facing 34 total charges, including “FRAUD – FALSE OWNER INFO PAWNED ITEMS 300 DOLS OR MORE”, “PETIT THEFT MERCH FARM TRANSIT 2+ PRIOR CONV”, and “GRAND THEFT 750 LESS THAN 5K DOLS”, according to jail records released to Boca Post by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Shawn Strassburger, 35, of the Boca Rio community in Boca Raton, has been arrested Saturday afternoon by the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office. Boca Post has been notified that the charges filed include more than 30 counts of fraud and theft charges.

A quick criminal history check shows Strassburger is no stranger to felony theft. Strassburger has an open criminal case from his most recent arrest by the Boca Raton Police Department for a felony shoplifting event at CVS in Boca Raton. He most recently rejected a plea offer on that case which is still pending an outcome.

Strassburger, a career criminal, has been in and out of prison since 2011 for theft and fraud-related charges.

A 13-page arrest affidavit submitted was submitted to the court in a request for a warrant for Strassburger’s arrest. In that report, investigators documented a pattern of behavior that proves Strassburger systematically stole big-ticket items from local retailers like Lowes and Home Depot and then pawned those items.

The following is a summary of that report:

During the month of December 2021, Detectives from the Broward Sheriff Office Operational & Tactical Intelligence Center (OPTIC), received information that (W/M) Shawn Strassburger (DOB:12/18/1986), is actively involved in committing retail theft at numerous locations in Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

Investigators reviewed local pawn tickets and learned that Strassburger has recently pawned numerous items at Black Diamond Pawn & Jewelry, located at 2201 West Sample Rd, Suite 1-A in Deerfield Beach (Broward County) and, more recently, at Black Diamond Pawn & Jewelry’s new location, located at 8488 W State Rd 84 in Davie (Broward County).

Broward Sheriff Office Deerfield Beach District OPTIC Detectives contacted local retailers, their Loss Prevention Investigators were familiar with Strassburger and alleged that he had recently stolen numerous merchandise items from their store locations.

Investigators have obtained evidence as outlined below, that Strassburgeris engaged in a systematic, ongoing course of conduct involving Organized Retail Theft. The investigation has revealed that Strassburger, has stolen merchandise from numerous retailers in Broward and Palm Beach Counties and sold the stolen merchandise to Black Diamond Pawn Shop in Broward County.

Detectives from the Broward Sheriff Office Deerfield Beach District OPTIC Unit conducted surveillance at Black Diamond Pawn & Jewelry on numerous occasions during the past several months. Detectives have seen Strassburger driving a 2010 grey Nissan Murano (FL-NZJK15) to Black Diamond Pawn & Jewelry. Strassburger would remove new, sealed, in-box items from the Murano and proceed inside Black Diamond Pawn & Jewelry with the items, (which were mostly high-end power tools, lawn equipment, water heaters, electrical wire, and AC Units) and pawn the items for cash. Investigators were able to clearly see Strassburger as he entered and exited Black Diamond Pawn & Jewelry. Strassburger has a distinct appearance. He is approximately 6’3” tall and weighs approximately 300 pounds. He has several distinct tattoos on his legs and arms that are easily visible when he’s wearing short sleeve shirts and shorts. Strassburger has short brown hair and a short chin-strap style beard. Investigators have personally observed Strassburger numerous times during surveillance and have become familiar with Strassburger’s appearance and mannerisms.

Investigators also reviewed Strassburger’s social media accounts with photos and other personal information and examined Strassburger’s photo in DAVID. Investigators have also reviewed numerous incidents captured on in-store video surveillance and can identify Strassburgeras as the individual in those videos.

Strassburger has an extensive criminal history and is a Florida Convicted Felon, who was released from the Florida Department of Corrections on 04/24/2020 after being incarcerated for 5 ’2 years for offenses involving theft, burglary, fraud, and pawning stolen items.

The report documents approximately 13 occurrences where Strassburger was observed entering a Boca Raton or Delray Beach area Home Depot or Lowes and then walking out with a high-priced item without paying. Strassburger would then drive directly to the pawnshop and sell the stolen items.

The following Home Depot and Lowes stores, including those in Boca Raton and Delray Beach, were hit for thousands of dollars by Strassburger:

Strassburger was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail at 2:19 on Saturday afternoon where he remains this morning. Strassburger currently has a bond set at $230,000 while he remains in PBSO custody awaiting his first appearance.

Strassburger is charged with the following:

• 14 counts of FRAUD – FALSE OWNER INFO PAWNED ITEMS 300 DOLS OR MORE
• 16 counts of LARC – PETIT THEFT MERCH FARM TRANSIT 2+ PRIOR CONV
• 4 counts of LARC – GRAND THEFT 750 LESS THAN 5K DOLS
