Bso Deputy Arrested After Swatting Bystander’S Cell Phone

BROWARD COUNTY, FL (Boca Post) — A BSO deputy is wearing a different uniform today after he was arrested for battery on a bystander who was recording an arrest with his cell phone.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Carlos Ferrufino, 34, turned himself in Tuesday morning at BSO’s Main Jail. He is facing two counts of misdemeanor battery, one count of tampering with evidence, and one count of petit theft.

The charges stem from a traffic stop that occurred on Jan. 25, 2021 in Dania Beach. Investigators with BSO’s Division of Internal Affairs said Dep. Ferrufino responded to the scene as a back-up deputy and deployed his Taser on the adult male driver. Relatives of the driver heard some commotion and came outside their residence. Detectives said when one of the family members started filming the interaction, Dep. Ferrufino swatted the cellphone from the man’s hand and tased him.

Even though the cellphone was collected on scene as evidence, investigators said Dep. Ferrufino never submitted the victim’s Apple iPhone7 into evidence.

“As law enforcement officers, our oath to uphold the law does not exempt us from following the law. There are consequences for breaking the law, even if it means bringing charges against one of our own,” Sheriff Gregory Tony said. “Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and I expect the highest level of professionalism from all BSO personnel.

Dep. Ferrufino is currently suspended without pay.
